The reason people often “wallow in their misery” is because all of the good things that will help them have been tainted by neglect and abuse.
Going outside regularly is good for you. Being Forced to go outside when you don’t want to and being treated like you’re stupid for not being super into nature is going to make you not believe that.
Exercise is good for you. Being told all of your feelings are “in your head” and exercise will get rid of any mental issue you have is going to make you not believe that.
Laying off technology is good for you. Being told by a parent that they wish they could break every piece of technology you own is going to make you not believe that.
You can’t be mad at people who were force-fed poison and wonder why they aren’t “trying to do better”
this is so true.
like i had to go on a ludicrously lengthy therapy journey to make any progress around my tendency to get more upset by my own distress and spiral on stressors, because as it turned out, decades of being told i was only experiencing distress because i allowed [thing] to distress me had ingrained a really deep and deeply counterproductive sense that any successful attempts to self-regulate on my part were ‘proving’ i had had no business complaining or even suffering in the first place.

My high school art teacher’s drug dealer was one of her own students, and you better believe he got straight As in that class - like, what are you going to do, give your weed man a B- because he doesn’t understand pointilism?
My favourite thing about this post is people getting offended that the sixteen-year-old drug dealer doesn’t understand pointilism.
